Colchester United have signed former Burnley striker Marvin Sordell on a contract to the end of the season.

The ex-England Under-21 international, 24, was released by the Championship side earlier this month, having scored once in 20 appearances since joining from Bolton in the summer of 2014.

Sordell has scored 33 goals in 153 career league appearances.

"The choice was stay at Burnley and probably not play, or come and play some football," Sordell told BBC Essex.

The former Watford youth graduate has played for the Clarets in the Premier League, but says that dropping down to League One will not faze him.

"I'm not one of those who's bothered whether he's playing in front of 90,000 like I did for Team GB or 3,000 or 5,000 at Colchester. I'm like a five or 10-year-old who just wants to play football. Why wouldn't you want to play?

"I've had some knockbacks in my career but it's how you pick yourself up. I've come here to play football, enjoy my game and help Colchester United. If I can use my experience of playing at the top level and that helps the younger players then that would be great."
