Lucas Joao's goal was his first in the league for Sheffield Wednesday, having scored once in the League Cup

Lucas Joao's dramatic late goal saw Sheffield Wednesday claim victory at Brentford in a game which saw both sides end with 10 men.

The Bees were the first to have a man dismissed, when James Tarkowski was sent off for bringing down Atdhe Nuhiu, who then scored the resulting penalty.

Alan Judge made it 1-1 after the break with a curling left-footed strike.

Jeremy Helan saw red a minute later for a second booking before Joao struck from outside the box late on.

Wednesday's winner arguably came against the run of play as, despite the Owls having a man advantage for more than 40 minutes, the hosts looked more likely to score after the break.

Before Brentford levelled, Judge had hit the post with a free-kick that evaded everyone in the box and, after Joao and Bannan had chances for the visitors, Bidwell then went close for the Bees when his shot was blocked by keeper Keiren Westwood.

Both sides hit the woodwork in the first half, with Nuhiu striking the bar for Wednesday and Jake Bidwell doing the same with a shot at the other end.

And it was soon after Bidwell's attempt that Nuhiu put the visitors ahead from the spot after being fouled by Tarkowski.

Judge's goal to make it 1-1 was a worthy equaliser, as he curled the ball past Westwood and it looked like momentum was favouring the hosts when Helan left the field soon after.

But despite pressing for a decisive second goal, it was Wednesday who claimed all three points and their first away win in eight attempts, when Joao raced through on goal before side-footing past Button.

Dijkhuizen's last interview as Brentford boss

Brentford boss Marinus Dijkhuizen: "Football is a beautiful game but also a very cruel one.

"We were excellent in the second half with 10 men and playing three at the back and when we scored it looked like we would go on and win.

"We lacked quality in the first half so it's a strange mental thing that we can be so good in second halves of games and not so good in the first. It is something we will talk about."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal: "It was our day. It was a lucky day. This is football. In the lottery we won 2-1.

"If we had drawn 1-1, we would say okay because we had a good first half with chances and they had a good second half with chances.

"But we are very, very happy, because we have had three wins this week."
