Remi Garde: Aston Villa consider Tim Sherwood replacement

Former Lyon coach Remi Garde played 31 games for Arsenal between 1996 and 1999

Former Lyon coach Remi Garde is under consideration by Aston Villa to replace Tim Sherwood who was sacked on Sunday.

Garde, 49, has been without a job since leaving Ligue 1 side Lyon in 2014, where he won the French Cup in 2012.

He played three seasons with Arsenal in the late '90s, and was part of the 1997-98 Double-winning side.

Meanwhile, former boss Sherwood says he is "very disappointed" at his dismissal by the club, but has "learned a lot" from the experience.

Sherwood, 46, took Villa to the FA Cup final last season, but was dismissed after a run of six straight defeats left them bottom of the Premier League.

"I knew when I took on the role that it would be a big challenge, but it proved to be one I greatly enjoyed," he said.

Sherwood was just eight months into a three-and-a-half-year deal and his sacking followed Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Swansea, which left the club 19th with only one win from 10 league games. Sunderland's victory over Newcastle the next day sent Villa bottom.

"I know I have learned a lot from this experience," former Tottenham manager Sherwood said in a statement.

"Obviously, the initial priority was to stay in the Premier League, but beating Liverpool in the FA Cup semi at Wembley and then leading the team out for the final was an achievement and experience that I will treasure for the rest of my career."

Real Sociedad's former Manchester United boss David Moyes, ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and Nigel Pearson, who was in charge most recently at Leicester, have also been linked with the vacant managerial role.
