Celtic 1-2 Molde: Ronny Deila 'must have thoughts about his position'

Former Celtic assistant manager Murdo MacLeod doubts Ronny Deila's suggestion that he has no thoughts about his future after their 2-1 defeat by Molde.

The Celtic manager is confident the club's board will give him more time to improve their European fortunes.

But MacLeod says Deila has to fix the problems this season, not next year.

"Obviously every manager has got to think about his position, especially when you're sitting bottom of the group," MacLeod told BBC Scotland.

"It is a strange one to say you are going to get it right for next season when there are still two games left.

"He's still got to try to get it right this season."

MacLeod thinks Deila will have to re-think his tactics after two straight defeats by the Europa League Group A fourth seeds left Celtic bottom of the table.

"Everyone knew that Molde would sit in and hit Celtic on the counter-attack and that's what happened," said the former Celtic midfielder.

"They were comfortable doing it, they were comfortable defensively and Celtic created very few chances and they caused Celtic problems with quick counter-attacks.

"Celtic have maybe got to change their system at the back because what they are doing just now at the back doesn't work."

MacLeod said the team failed to inspire the kind of atmosphere often associated with Celtic Park during European competitions.

"It was very strange to go to a European night at Celtic Park and normally the fans are on their feet the whole time getting behind the side," he said.

"Even at 2-1 down, they weren't chasing the game. They were just sitting in, knocking the ball across the pitch at walking pace.

"All these players, when they are playing well, they are good to watch, they play at a good pace, they get forward and create chances, but that didn't happen last night."

Yet MacLeod thought Deila's side started the game promisingly.

"What you've got to look back on is the performance, especially the second half," he added.

"I thought the side started the game really well, they got two goals disallowed and you thought this could be a really good night.

"Then the usual at the back - they gave away a silly goal after 20 minutes and then they were chasing the game after that.

"In the second half, there was no team spirit. There were not enough people getting forward, there were not enough people thinking about the game.

"There was not enough pace about the game Celtic played."
