One of Italy's fiercest derbies was the scene of a fans' boycott while a familiar face in his mid-30s has been linked with a European giant after a remarkable resurgence.

Fans boycott Rome derby

Edin Dzeko has five goals for Roma this season

One of Europe's most passionate derbies was played out in front of thousands of empty seats on Sunday as fans of Roma and Lazio boycotted their game in protest over increased security measures at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

Supporters of both clubs continued the protest which has seen them refuse to attend recent home games over the decision to erect extra barriers in the 'curve' behind each goal.

The clubs, who share the stadium, were ordered by local authorities to introduce the measures to enable police to enter the areas in case of crowd trouble.

"I hope this situation is resolved soon and I hope the derby can become a celebration again," Roma midfielder Alessandro Florenzi said.

The Stadio Olimpico has a capacity of just over 72,000. Around 50,000 fans have watched the game in recent seasons but just 35,000 were expected on Sunday, although but no official attendance was given.

Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko and ex-Arsenal forward Gervinho scored a goal in each half as Roma beat Lazio 2-0 to maintain pressure on leaders Inter Milan, who beat Torino 1-0.

Fans who chose to boycott the game showed their support for their teams by packing out their final pre-match training sessions and following the players from the team hotel to the stadium before watching the action on screens in the city.

Kuyt refuses to go quietly

He might be 35 years old, but former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt is showing no signs of slowing down.

The Dutchman has been forced to answer rumours of a surprise move to Barcelona following a return to form late in his career.

Kuyt has taken the Dutch league by storm this season with 10 goals in 12 appearances and, while he had a rare game without finding the net on Sunday, he played 90 minutes as his Feyenoord team kept up the pressure on leaders Ajax.

The teams, who are first and second in the table, drew 1-1 in Rotterdam.

His form prompted rumours of a bid from the European champions, who are said to be interested in signing an experienced striker once their transfer embargo is lifted in January.

"Should the Feyenoord fans be concerned because I might go to Barca? No," Kuyt told Dutch TV station RTL.

"I've started something beautiful and I want to finish it."

From 4-0 down... to victory against eight men

Three TSV Neumarkt players were sent off as they lost a four-goal lead to lose 5-4 at SV Seekirchen

Austrian third-tier football rarely garners international attention, but one result in the Regionalliga West on Saturday can only be described as mind boggling.

It came in the match between neighbours SV Seekirchen and TSV Neumarkt, who both play a few miles from the city of Salzburg.

Neumarkt, in the bottom half of the table, were looking to bounce back from a 6-0 hammering at Kitzbuhel a week earlier, and looked well set after going 4-0 up inside 32 minutes. Then it all rather fell apart.

Seekirchen, chasing promotion, pulled two goals back before the interval, and when Bernhard Rosslhuber made it 4-3 in the first minute of the second half, the visitors must have been feeling jittery.

Astonishing scenes followed. Midfielder Ingo Enzenberger was the first of three Neumarkt players sent off, with team-mates Leonhard Ettlmayer and Bernhard Huber Rieder following after Rosslhuber had scored his second to make it 4-4.

The visitors, reduced to eight men, hung on grimly until the 89th minute, when Michael Aigner snatched a Seekirchen winner to complete the most extraordinary of comebacks.

From £10m outcast to goal machine

All five of Brown Ideye's goals for Olympiakos have come since the start of October

He often looked like he could not buy a goal in the Premier League, but former West Brom record signing Brown Ideye has found his scoring form again in one of Europe's hottest teams.

The Nigerian striker, who cost the Baggies £10m when he signed from Dynamo Kiev in the summer of 2014 but struggled for goals and even a place in the squad, registered his fifth goal in seven games for Olympiakos as they beat Iraklis 2-0 at home to claim their 10th straight win in all competitions before the derby with Panathinaikos on 21 November.

The Athens-based club have won all 10 league games so far this season and a 3-0 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League is the only time they have failed to collect maximum points.

Ideye has scored four times in domestic games since his £4m exit from The Hawthorns in the summer, including the second goal on Sunday after Luka Milivojevic had opened the scoring.

Astana at the double

Astana are the first side from Kazakhstan to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League

It has been quite a week for Astana, who followed up a Champions League draw against La Liga side Atletico Madrid by claiming a second successive domestic title in Kazakhstan.

They clinched their second Kazakhstan Premier League crown in a row on Sunday when they beat Aktobe 1-0 at home.

Junior Kabananga from the Democratic Republic of Congo scored the game's only goal of the game in the 87th minute as the club from the Kazakh capital finished a point ahead of Kairat Almaty.

Astana are bottom of Champions League Group C behind Benfica, Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray with two points from four matches.

Neville's wonderful weekend

Dani Parejo scored twice and set up another goal for Valencia

Former Manchester United and Everton midfielder Phil Neville enjoyed a curious treble of victories over the weekend.

Neville, along with four of his former United team-mates, co-owns Northern Premier League side Salford City, but had to follow their 2-0 FA Cup first-round win over Notts County via Twitter from Spain.

That was because, as assistant manager of Valencia, he was preparing for Saturday's La Liga trip to a Celta Vigo side who began the weekend in third place.

Valencia have underperformed so far this season, but chalked up an extraordinary 5-1 win, as Paco Alcacer and Dani Parejo scored twice, with former Everton fringe player Shkodran Mustafi also on target.

Two great results for Neville, then - and to complete the hat-trick, his former club United beat West Brom 2-0 in the Premier League. No wonder he was happy on Saturday evening.
