Dick Campbell was named League One manager of the month for August

Dick Campbell has been sacked as Forfar Athletic manager after seven years in charge of the Angus club.

The decision came after a 1-0 home defeat by his old club, Cowdenbeath, left them third bottom in League One, with four wins from 17 league games.

Earlier this season, Campbell was awarded the League One manager of the month award for August after three wins and a draw put them top of the table.

The 62-year-old led Forfar to promotion from the old Third Division in 2010.

His twin brother, Ian, who had been his assistant, took charge temporarily while Campbell battled against kidney cancer in 2011.

However, he returned to lead the Loons to the play-offs last season, narrowly missing out on promotion following a 4-3 aggregate defeat by Alloa Athletic in their play-off final, having been 3-1 ahead following the home leg.

As well as Cowdenbeath, Campbell also previously managed Dunfermline Athletic, Brechin City, Partick Thistle and Ross County before being appointed at Station Park in May 2008.
