Shrewsbury Town are set to appoint Brian Caldwell from Scottish side St Mirren as replacement for Burnley-bound chief executive Matt Williams.

Caldwell revealed on Wednesday that he was to leave the Buddies to take up a similar role with a club in England.

And sources both north and south of the border have confirmed that the 46-year-old Scot will be moving to Shropshire.

Caldwell joined St Mirren as general manager from Ayr United in 2007 and was upgraded to chief executive in 2012.

Among the projects overseen during his eight-year tenure was the move in 2009 from their old ground at Love Street to the club's new 8,023 all-seater home on Greenhill Road.

Coincidentally, he arrives from Paisley, the home town of current Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon.

Williams has been with Shrewsbury since arriving from Blackpool in May 2014, but is set to return to Lancashire as his wife is expecting their first child in March.

Shrewsbury, promoted from League Two under Mellon in April, are currently 18th in League One, one point clear of the relegation zone.
