St Johnstone are aiming to sign a winger and retain in-form forward Michael O'Halloran during January.
Manager Tommy Wright told BBC Scotland: "I would like a winger in and I'm looking at that. We have a few targets. Other areas, we are pretty strong."
But it would not be as a replacement for 24-year-old O'Halloran, with Wright confident he will stay beyond January.
"The signs are yes. He is not for sale, he's under contract," said his manager when asked about potential suitors.
"There has been speculation in the press, but there's been nothing officially.
"He's having a tremendous season, he's loving his football, he's got a semi-final to look forward to, we don't need to sell him. The club's in a good financial position and we're not planning to sell him.
"Hopefully, he'll still be here and we can finish the season well, because this season he's been a massive player for us."
O'Halloran signed for Saints from Bolton Wanderers on an 18-month contract in January 2014 having had loan spells with Sheffield United, Carlisle United and Tranmere Rovers.
The Scot agreed a contract extension until the summer of 2017, and was described in October by his manager, external as the best striker playing in Scottish football. He was named Scottish Premiership player of the month, external for November.
Wright said O'Halloran's UK-wide profile had especially been lifted by his display in a televised League Cup win over Rangers in September but stressed that the forward had performed well since his arrival.
"The first spell until the end of the season, when we won the Scottish Cup, he scored five goals, he scored 10 goals last season, he's already scored four this season and he's had a lot of assists," the manager told BBC Scotland.
"I look at him over the period. I've been more than happy with him.
"He's happy, he's enjoying his football and he's never indicated that, if anyone came in for him, he would want to leave."
Wright, whose side lie fourth in the Scottish Premiership, expects any January additions to his squad to be loan deals.
However, he stressed: "From my point of view, if I wake up on the 1 February and I have that squad to go the rest of the season, I will be more than happy."
