Luke Varney has signed a deal with Ipswich Town until the end of the season, while fellow forward David McGoldrick faces lengthy spell out.

Varney, 33, has been undergoing rehabilitation with Ipswich since injuring his Achilles in last season's play-off semi-final against Norwich while on loan from Blackburn.

He played 12 games for Ipswich before being released by Rovers in the summer.

Meanwhile, McGoldrick is out for the "long-term" with a hamstring tear.

The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international has scored three goals in 19 appearances for Mick McCarthy's side this season.

Varney, who has scored 67 goals in 345 career league appearances for eight Football League clubs, including Derby and Leeds, comes in as cover for McGoldrick.
