Irish Premiership: Coleraine 2-1 Ballymena Utd

Jamie McGonigle scored twice as Coleraine ended a three-match losing streak in the league by beating derby rivals Ballymena United 2-1.

McGonigle picked the ball up from Rodney Brown's pass, rounded keeper Alan Blayney and found the net with an angled shot in the 18th minute.

David Cushley smashed home a superb right-foot shot from the edge of the area to equalise after 31 minutes.

McGonigle fired in on 61 after Brown headed the ball down into his path.

The Bannsiders started brightly and James McLaughlin headed wide, before Blayney denied teenager McGonigle.

After McGonigle's opener, Michael Doherty saved brilliantly from Darren Henderson with his boot, then Cushley levelled with one of his trademark spectacular efforts.

Blayney twice denied the lively McGonigle a hat-trick in the second half, while the visiting goalkeeper also tipped over from McLaughlin.

Just after the hour mark, Ruairi Harkin provided the cross from the right, from which Brown set up McGonigle for the winner.

Coleraine manager Oran Kearney: "Jamie is one of a lot of promising youngsters we have in our changing room and we try to keep their feet on the ground.

"We haven't had the rub of the green in recent weeks so it is good to get back on track. It hasn't been an easy few weeks but that was a big, big performance, so credit goes to the players.

"Our league form has generally been good but we have to kick on and maintain the standards we have set for most of the campaign."
