Rochdale ended a four-match winless run as Joe Bunney's fourth goal in three games deepened Fleetwood's relegation fears.
Bunney slid in the only goal of the game on 12 minutes from Jim McNulty's left-wing cross.
Bristol City loanee Wes Burns headed against the bar for the visitors late on.
Fleetwood remain outside the drop-zone on goal difference, while Rochdale are nine points better off in 16th.
Rochdale manager Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester:
"It was important to get to get these three points as it backs up our two previous draws.
"It's no good being a development coach or manager, my history and my success at the club doesn't mean nothing. It's about this season and we needed the three points and we got them.
"I'm trying to establish this football club in League One and I feel we are in line for that. That would be success for me."
