Irish Premiership: Warrenpoint 2-0 Portadown

Basement club Warrenpoint's remarkable revival continued on Tuesday night as they beat Portadown in the Premiership.

It means Barry Gray's men have won two home games in four days, having previously failed to pick up any league victories at Milltown all season.

Martin Murray shot Warrenpoint into the lead in the 72nd minute and substitute Johnny McMurray finished superbly to make it 2-0 on 80 minutes.

Town are unbeaten in five now, having previously lost 13 games in a row.

They are just three points behind one-from-bottom Carrick Rangers who lost 1-0 away to Ballymena United on Tuesday night.

Ronnie McFall's Portadown have lost their last four Premiership fixtures and are eighth in the table.

Tuesday's rearranged match was a dreary affair until Martin Murray made the breakthrough with a low shot from just inside the box after McMurray's pass from the right.

Eight minutes later it was 2-0 as Warrenpoint made a quick break down the left and McMurray netted a fine left-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Warrenpoint manager Barry Gray: "We are delighted - it is a massive win for us.

"It has been a god few days for us but I have told the players they have to stay focused on what we still have to do.

"This will be great for confidence levels. We started slowly, but the second half was pleasing."

Portadown assistant manager Kieran Harding: "We are bitterly disappointed.

"We controlled the first half without creating any clear-cut chances and then the match turned on us losing possession.

"We gave Warrenpoint their first goal. Nothing was happening, but then we lost the ball and it ended up in the back of our net.

"After that, we were chasing the game."
