Transfer window: £175m spent, one classic quote, five failed deals

With £175m being spent across the January transfer window, and over a record £1bn by British clubs in 2015/16, BBC Sport takes a look at the facts and figures of the spending and stories across the country.

• British clubs spent a total of £175m during the January transfer window which was a five year high.

• One surprise deadline day signing was that of Steven Fletcher from Sunderland to Marseille. Upon announcing his arrival, the French club said "He will not leave you unmoved. He will not go unnoticed. Marseille has added a Scotsman to the mix. And if you know anything about the mentality of that people, you'll know that's good news."

• Of the £175m spent by British clubs, £110m was spent overseas, £45m came from clubs buying from other Premier League teams, and £20m was used to purchase players within the football league.

• Middlesbrough signed Jordan Rhodes on deadline day and may prove a worthwhile signing. Since August 2012, Jordan Rhodes has scored the most goals in English football with 85. Charlie Austin has scored 71 in the same period, Troy Deeney has 70, Sergio Aguero has netted 61 times, Ross McCormack 65 and Nakhi Wells has the sixth most with 60 goals.

• The biggest deals of the January transfer window saw Giannelli Imbula move to Stoke for £18.3m, Oumar Niasse cost Everton £13.5m, and paid £12m each for Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey.

• With £63m combined, Newcastle (£29m) and Watford (£34m) have spent more between them than the entire 20 clubs in La Liga.

• The news that Pep Guardiola is to replace Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City manager was the most tweeted story of Deadline Day with over 200,000 tweets.

• And despite many rumours throughout January there were many big-name signings that did not go through. Alex Teixeira's move to Liverpool failed to occur, Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao did not leave Chelsea, Moussa Dembele will remain a Fulham player until at least the summer, and Saido Berahino, subject to speculation over a move to either Newcastle or Spurs, will continue at current club West Brom.
