Miguel Chines' penalty put Carrick Rangers 1-0 up against Crumlin Star in Monday night's Irish Cup sixth round tie

A second-half penalty by Miguel Chines booked Carrick Rangers a place in the quarter-finals of the Irish Cup.

Chines converted the spot kick in the 63rd minute of Monday night's sixth round tie at Seaview after a foul on Conor McCloskey in the box.

Crumlin were reduced to 10 men when Gary McKernan was shown a straight red card for the tackle.

Carrick will now host league champions Crusaders in the last eight on Saturday 5 March.

Crumlin carved out the first chance after five minutes when Ciaran Murphy was put through on goal but he fired straight into the hands of Carrick 'keeper Brian Neeson.

At the other end, Aaron Treanor's low shot was well saved by Crumlin goalkeeper Ciaran McNeill.

The best chance of the half fell to Carrick striker Miguel Chines, whose shot from the edge of the box flew narrowly over the bar in the 15th minute.

In the only real goal-scoring opportunity of the match, McCloskey's legs were taken from under him by McKernan and Chines buried the resulting penalty low to the bottom left corner of the net.

Ryan Kane almost doubled Carrick's lead seven minutes from time but his shot from the right was tipped onto the bar by McNeill.
