PSV Eindhoven 0-0 Atletico Madrid
- Published
PSV Eindhoven's last-16 Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid is finely poised after the hosts survived the last 22 minutes with 10 men.
Atletico should have been ahead at the interval, Jeffrey Bruma clearing Luciano Vietto's attempt off the line.
Antoine Griezmann was then denied by a fine save from PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet after springing the offside trap.
Dutch champions PSV went close through Davy Propper before Gaston Pereiro was sent off in the 68th minute.
Uruguay-born forward Pereiro, who had already been booked, was ordered off after jumping into countryman Diego Godin.
Atletico Madrid, the 2014 runners-up, will start as favourites to advance to the quarter-finals when the two teams meet in the second leg at the Vicente Calderon on 15 March.
Atletico's scoring problems mount for Simeone
Atletico remain unbeaten away from home in the Champions League this season.
In addition, Diego Simeone's side have now secured an impressive 12th clean sheet in 16 Champions League outings.
However, their problems are increasing at the other end of the pitch and they have now managed just seven goals in eight games.
Substitute Fernando Torres injected some urgency into their play when the former Liverpool forward came on for the final half an hour.
Yet Griezmann's failure to score when clean through proved costly, while Koke also spurned a chance after PSV's suspect defence was sliced wide open.
The Dutch leaders had beaten Manchester United, Wolfsburg and CSKA Moscow at home in the group stages.
Yet Phillip Cocu's side struggled to pose Atletico's defence problems, Propper forcing Jan Oblak into a rare serious save after pinball inside the visitors' defence.
Manager reaction
PSV Eindhoven boss Phillip Cocu: "I am very satisfied with this result. I said beforehand that if we could keep a clean sheet at home it would put us in a good position for the second leg."
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone: "Goals will come. They're a tough opponent. I'm relaxed with the fact we have the game at home in the second leg. The only thing we missed was scoring a goal.
"From the start of the game we pressed them, played in their half and created chances. In the second half we controlled the game and Oblak didn't have a save to make, so I am very happy with the team."
