Morecambe: Chairman Peter McGuigan says League One will be the aim for new owner

Morecambe chairman Peter McGuigan says the new owner of the club will aim to take them into League One within the next three years.

The majority shareholder announced that he was was putting the club up for sale, having served 16 years at the helm for the Shrimps.

"I feel the club is in a much better place then it has ever been and the time is right for someone else to come in," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"There has been some interest already."

The Shrimps have taken only two points from the last 30 available - the fewest of any team in the top four divisions over the last 10 games.

However, Morecambe are 11 points above the drop zone and McGuigan said that he was confident the club would be in League Two next season, adding that he believes the timing of announcement gives a new owner the time to "look at the squad and everything for next year".

McGuigan said: "If we get the right person coming in, I believe that the objective in the next three years is to get to League One.

"I think it's important to do that because the majority of clubs in League One are northern based whereas the majority in League Two are southern based and that affects the away support quite a lot.

"You can't put a timeframe on it as it depends on how many have a real interest in the club and it won't happen overnight."
