EA Sports Cup: Cork City 1-2 Derry City (after extra-time)

Dean Jarvis scored Derry City's winning goal in the first period of extra-time

Derry City booked their place in the EA Sports Cup semi-finals by coming from a goal down to beat Cork City 2-1 after extra-time at Turner's Cross on Monday.

Mark O'Sullivan gave the hosts a ninth-minute lead but Barry McNamee levelled with a low shot from the edge of the box six minutes before the interval.

Dean Jarvis scored in the fifth minute of extra-time with a stooping header from Nathan Boyle's cross.

Rory Patterson missed two late chances to extend his side's winning margin.

Boyle had earned the Candystripes' place in the last eight by netting both goals in a 2-0 victory over Sligo Rovers in their second round tie last month.

Sligo subsequently ended Derry's nine-match unbeaten run when they defeated Kenny Shiels's side 2-0 in a Premier Division encounter at the Brandywell on Friday night.

Derry named a strong team for the trip to Cork, with Jarvis and Aaron Barry making their first starts since recovering from injury.

Keith Ward went close with a curling shot in the early stages but the visitors found themselves behind when O'Sullivan rifled the ball low into the bottom corner past a stranded Ger Doherty after Derry's defensive wall disintegrated.

Ward provided the assist for McNamee to take one touch and shoot home a deserved equaliser.

In the second half, Ger Doherty produced a fine save to deny Danny Morrissey and Conor McCormack fired just over.

Jarvis's goal proved to be the winner, before Patterson saw his effort well stopped by Alan Smith when he was through on goal and the striker then hit the post in the dying seconds with the goal at his mercy.

Derry face St Patrick's Athletic in a league match at Inchicore on Friday night.
