Claudio Ranieri: Italy chief wants Leicester boss to win World Cup

Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio wants Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri to coach Italy to a World Cup win in the future.

Ranieri lifted the Enzo Bearzot award as Italy's coach of the season in Rome on Monday after leading 5,000/1 shots Leicester to the Premier League title.

"I hope Ranieri can win a World Cup with Italy, that would be the best," said Tavecchio.

Bearzot, who died in 2010, was Italy's 1982 World-Cup winning coach.

Tavecchio added: "I'm speaking in an abstract way, of course, and not necessarily about the next World Cup. Claudio is still young [Ranieri is 64] and will have time on his side.

"Have we thought about him as a replacement for [outgoing Italy coach Antonio] Conte? It's him who should be thinking about us!

"We're thinking about a lot of different things right now, but those in his second sporting homeland are wishing him every success."

Ranieri was chosen for the Bearzot award by representatives of major Italian sports newspapers.

He said: "I never met Bearzot but I've been told by people that they see his spirit in me and that fills me with pride."
