Shrewsbury Town: Micky Mellon to remain as manager of League One club

Micky Mellon is now set for his third season as Shrewsbury Town manager

Micky Mellon will remain as Shrewsbury Town boss next season, after the League One club's brush with relegation.

Mellon said on Thursday that his future or otherwise would only be shaped by a meeting with chairman Roland Wycherley.

But the pair spoke amicably at the team's hotel on Saturday night prior to Sunday's final game with Swindon.

"We had great talks on Saturday night. We sat down like we would any weekend to talk about the future of the club," Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We both know the way that we want to move the club forward.

"I can 100 per cent say I'll be here to rebuild this team," added the 44-year-old Scot. "I'm happy at what was said and I'm strong enough to go and do that."

Contract talks await for majority of Shrewsbury squad

Now his own future is sorted, Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon's first task this summer, following a much-needed short end-of-season break, will be to sort out his squad, both in terms of who stays and who he needs to bring in.

"There's a lot of work to be done," said Mellon. "We're spinning a lot of plates. We know the type of players we need to compete."

Town have 17 players out of contract in June, including skipper Nat Knight-Percival, who missed Sunday's final game and now needs a knee operation.

"I'd like to stay," Knight-Percival told BBC Radio Shropshire."But I'm in the same position as a lot of others at the end of contracts. It's out of my hands."

The club have until 23 May to tell the players if they want to keep them or not.

Crystal Palace loan striker Sullay Kaikai, Town's 12-goal top scorer, returned to his parent club prior to the Swindon game.

Shrewsbury's five other loan players, Peterborough striker Kyle Vassell, midfielders Richie Wellens (Doncaster Rovers) and James Wallace (Sheffield United) and Fulham pair Jack Grimmer and Larnell Cole are due to go back to their parent clubs.

Shrewsbury also have two loaned-out players due to return to the club after four months away, strikers James Collins (Northampton Town) and Tyrone Barnett (Southend United).
