Remi Matthews has joined Accies after signing a new deal with Norwich

Remi Matthews has joined Hamilton as a replacement for Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern after signing a new two-year contract with Norwich City.

The 22-year-old Englishman will spend a season on loan with Accies in the Scottish Premiership.

He becomes Accies' second signing of this week after the arrival of full-back Jack Breslin, released by Celtic.

Hamilton Academical slumped to an opening Scottish League Cup defeat away to Ayr United, who were promoted to the Championship.

Another Premiership side, Dundee, lost in a penalty shoot-out against League One outfit East Fife and Championship side Falkirk crashed away to Stirling Albion of League Two.

Other top-flight sides found the going tough, but holders Ross County, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Kilmarnock and St Johnstone all won their opening group games.
