After losing at Reading on Saturday, the win over Hartlepool was PNE's first of the season

Eoin Doyle converted Chris Humphrey's low cross as Preston scored late in injury-time to defeat League Two Hartlepool in the EFL Cup.

Nicky Deverdics went close with a free-kick, Josh Laurent forced a save and Lewis Alessandra had an effort ruled out for offside as the away side threatened after the break.

Alessandra cleared off his own line to deny Paul Huntington's header.

But Doyle, earlier denied by Adam Bartlett, then struck from close range.
