Championship club Reading earned a spot in the second round of the EFL Cup by beating League Two club Plymouth.

The Royals went ahead when Joey van den Berg turned in John Swift's free-kick.

Roy Beerens doubled the lead before half-time, firing in from the edge of the box after Plymouth goalkeeper Vincent Dorel saved from Chris Gunter.

David Goodwillie fired wide for the Pilgrims after the break, as Reading held on to maintain new boss Jaap Stam's perfect record at the club.
