Frank Lampard's New York City FC beat Steven Gerrard's LA Galaxy 1-0 in the first meeting of the former England midfielders since their moves to the United States.

New York City, managed by Patrick Vieira, took an early lead when David Villa prodded home from six yards.

Ashley Cole - another ex-England international - lined up alongside Gerrard for LA Galaxy.

The victory for Lampard's side extends their lead in the Eastern Conference.

They are four points clear of Toronto, while Gerrard's team remain third in the Western Conference.
