Morecambe captain Peter Murphy says he is nearing fitness after eight months out with cruciate ligament damage.

Since joining in June 2015, the Shrimps captain has made just nine appearances due to two separate knee injuries and a blood clot on his lung.

The midfielder made his latest return as a late substitute in the Lancashire side's EFL Trophy defeat by Bury.

"I did my medial in my first game and while I was out I got a blood clot, which I didn't know about," he said.

"Before I knew it it was in my lungs, so that was scary, but I've managed to come back from that."

Murphy, 26, had to wait seven weeks to have his most recent knee injury operated on as another ligament was damaged at the same time.

He added to BBC Radio Lancashire: "The knee's fine itself, everything around it's fine, it's just building myself up ready for league football.

"I'll try to get in the squad again next week and then I've got a reserve game planned, so hopefully I'll build my minutes up over the next couple of weeks."
