Wes Brown won 23 England caps over an 11-year spell

Blackburn Rovers have signed defender Wes Brown on a free transfer until the end of the season.

The former England centre-back, 36, was released by Sunderland in the summer following a five-year spell with the Premier League side.

Brown will also assist coaching Blackburn's under-23 side as part of his contract at Ewood Park.

He injured his calf in pre-season training with the Championship club, but is fit to face Derby on Saturday.

Rovers are currently second-bottom in the Championship with five points from eight games, but earned their first league win of the season against Rotherham on Saturday.

Brown came through the academy at Manchester United before moving to Sunderland in 2011. During his time at Old Trafford his team won the Premier League five times, two FA Cups, the Champions League twice and the League Cup three times.
