Rangers go back in time

Mark Warburton has turned back the clock to try to find a winning formula for Rangers.

The Ibrox team dug out their first Premiership win in five attempts at the weekend and all bar two of the players who started against Partick Thistle were part of last season's Championship-winning side.

The midfield pairing of Jason Holt and Andy Halliday continues to be a key component for Rangers. Both are dynamic and crucial to the system manager Warburton wants to play.

They had the upper hand for much of the match at Aberdeen the previous weekend and, in the 2-0 win against Thistle, their energy allowed the artistry of Niko Kranjcar to have a major influence on the match.

The Rangers motto at the moment should probably be 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it'.

Hearts in safe hands

Hearts goalkeeper Jack Hamilton has been called up to the Scotland squad

Hearts look to have a top goalkeeper in the making. I'm really impressed by how much 22-year-old Jack Hamilton has improved since being installed as Tynecastle number one.

Not that he looked anything like a dodgy keeper when I saw him play earlier in the season. But, watching him as Hearts beat Motherwell at Fir Park on Friday night, I was struck by how much his confidence has grown.

Hamilton pulled off a really important save when the game was goalless, showing razor-sharp reactions to keep out a deflected shot from Motherwell midfielder Craig Clay. Hearts went on to win 3-1.

Young Jack is in the Scotland squad, along with Hearts team-mate Callum Paterson, and the pair of them could be joined soon by another youthful member of the Tynecastle "back five", John Souttar.

Goalkeeper is a position in which the national team has strength but Hamilton is certainly one for the future.

Faddy still has it

James McFadden scored a sublime free-kick in the 3-1 defeat to Hearts

He's 33 and the Motherwell assistant manager these days, but James McFadden's left foot still does a pretty decent impression of a magic wand.

In his latest cameo appearance he left the bench late on with his team already three goals down to Hearts, and scored with one of the best set-piece strikes you'll see.

There was no goal celebration with defeat already a certainty. That was a shame because the 30-yard free kick, curling and dipping into the top corner, was well worth celebrating.

It was a moment to roll back the years and recall some of Faddy's greatest hits for Motherwell, Everton, Birmingham and, of course, Scotland.

Hopefully there are one or two more to come out on the pitch. Meantime, James is sharing his special talent on the training ground with some lucky Motherwell players.

Thistle do nicely

Inverness CT have proved a lot of doubters wrong this season

My award for top turnaround of the season so far - and I accept it is a bit early to be dishing out any prizes - goes to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

It was shaping up to be a long, hard campaign for new gaffer Richie Foran when the Highlanders were beaten in their first three Premiership matches and lost in the League Cup at Alloa.

But, since picking up their first points against St Johnstone at the end of August, Inverness have been on the road to recovery.

They left it late at Hamilton on Saturday before extending their unbeaten run to five games, but there's a doggedness about Caley Thistle that means you're never really surprised when, as they did at New Douglas Park, Inverness snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat.

They've also drawn with the top two, Celtic and Aberdeen, in the last few weeks and have climbed from bottom of the Premiership at the start of September to a share of sixth place.
