In 11 days, Gordon Strachan leads Scotland to Wembley seeking a memorable result against England to reinvigorate the World Cup qualifying campaign.

The manager will name his squad on Wednesday, with the headline news expected to be Scott Brown's return from a brief spell of retirement from international football.

Strachan has no other radical options to hand, though, and will have to rely on a familiar group of players. Here is how they fared with their clubs this weekend.

Martin scored twice for Fulham on Saturday

  • Chris Martin is a striker on form, scoring twice in Saturday's 5-0 win over Huddersfield to make it four goals in four games for Fulham since Scotland's last double-header

  • Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur netted both goals in Saturday's 4-2 defeat to Liverpool, taking his season tally to five in 11 appearances, including his crucial goal for Scotland against Lithuania

  • Matt Ritchie played the full 90 minutes as Newcastle continued their winning run with a 2-1 win over Preston, and still no Championship player has created more goals this season than his five assists

  • Alan Hutton is staking a claim for the right-back berth currently held by Hearts' Callum Paterson, having played the full 90 minutes in Aston Villa's last three games

  • Stoke City defender Phil Bardsley could also be in contention, after starting the last two matches but may miss Monday's game with Swansea following the death of his grandfather

  • There might be competition for places at right-back, but at left-back a replacement is needed due to injuries. Rangers' Lee Wallace would be the more experienced choice and he scored in Saturday's 3-0 win over Kilmarnock, while Stephen Kingsley is in line to make his seventh start of the season for Swansea at Stoke

  • Oliver Burke continues to make steady progress for Red Bull Leipzig, coming off the bench in the 70th minute against SV Darmstadt and delivering his second assist of the season in a 2-0 victory

Feeling the grind

Marshall is yet to keep a clean sheet in six games for Hull City

  • David Marshall's woes continued, with the goalkeeper conceding his 16th goal in five league games for Hull City, as they lost 1-0 at Watford

  • Christophe Berra has been part of an Ipswich Town backline that has conceded five goals in two games, including the weekend's 2-2 draw with Rotherham, since manager Mick McCarthy described Berra as the best defender in the Championship

  • Struggling Blackburn Rovers welcomed Gordon Greer and Charlie Mulgrew back into the starting line, the latter at left-back, as they earned a 1-1 draw against Wolves

  • Another option for left-back, Barry Douglas, retained his place in the Konyaspor starting line-up, having returned for the 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce last weekend, but lost again as his side fell 2-0 at Bursaspor

  • Norwich City centre-back Russell Martin endured a chastening 90 minutes as his side were defeated 5-0 by promotion rivals Brighton, with midfielder Graeme Dorrans also playing the full match as he continues to hold down a starting place in Alex Neil's side

  • Midfielder Barry Bannan was unable to prevent Sheffield Wednesday being defeated 2-0 by Derby County, although attacker Johnny Russell played the full 90 minutes for the victors

  • Darren Fletcher is having a difficult time at West Bromwich Albion, the captain lasting only 51 minutes before he was replaced in the 4-0 defeat against Manchester City by Scotland team-mate James Morrison, with a small number of West Brom fans cheering the swap

Injury doubts

Fletcher was hurt after coming off the bench

  • Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher was withdrawn against Derby County after a clash of heads 17 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute, with the wound requiring five stitches

  • Left-backs Kieran Tierney, of Celtic, and Andrew Robertson, of Hull City, are definitely ruled out through injury

  • Hull City midfielder Robert Snodgrass is also a doubt with an ankle problem, although he hopes to declare himself fit for Scotland

Kicking their heels

Morrison has not started a league match for West Brom this season

  • Newcastle defender Grant Hanley, Norwich midfielder Steven Naismith, and Derby midfielder Ikechi Anya were all restricted to brief and late appearances from the substitutes' bench in their clubs' respective weekend matches, while Ross McCormack came on in the 26th minute for Aston Villa

  • Shaun Maloney, meanwhile, did not make it off the bench - for the third consecutive match - during Hull's 1-0 defeat to Watford

Making a case

  • Stuart Armstrong has been in impressive form for Celtic, having played his way into the starting line-up for the 1-0 win over Aberdeen

  • Midfielders Tom Cairney and Kevin McDonald both started for Fulham again, and between them have created five of the team's 27 goals this season
