Wales Women began their two-match friendly series in Portugal with a 2-1 win at the Estádio do Fontelo in Viseu.
Portugal had enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half.
But the hosts found themselves behind at half-time to Hayley Ladd's goal, after the Bristol City player unleashed a 30-yarder into the top left corner.
Mel Fletcher doubled Wales' lead, but Jayne Ludlow's side had to hold on after Cláudia Neto pulled a goal back from the penalty spot.
Ludlow's substitutions included handing Wichita FC forward Peyton Vincze her senior debut.
Wales face Portugal again on Sunday, 11 June as they prepare for the Fifa Women's World Cup Qualifying campaign, which begins in the autumn.
England, Russia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Kazakhstan will be Wales' Group One opponents.
