Shaun Maloney's proposed one-year deal with Aberdeen is on hold and in doubt after he flagged up an injury concern, BBC Scotland has learned.

The 34-year-old Hull City midfielder did not have a full medical with the Pittodrie club but has instead opted to investigate the seriousness of the issues before deciding on his future.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes hoped to add the Scotland player to his squad for their Europa League tie on 13 July.

That, though, is now highly unlikely.

Maloney had been offered a new one-year deal by Hull, where he played 14 games last season, but the lure of signing for his hometown club looked to have proved decisive.

His arrival would help the Dons compensate for the loss of Jonny Hayes, who has moved to Celtic, and Niall McGinn, who is believed to be on the verge of a move to a South Korean club.

Aberdeen are preparing for their first competitive match of the season, their Europa League second qualifying round first-leg match at home against Kazakhstan's Ordabasy or Siroki Brijeg of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Siroki Brijeg hold a 2-0 lead going into Thursday's return leg of their first-round qualifier.

Maloney had two spells in the Scottish top flight with Celtic, interrupted by a year with Aston Villa.

He left the Glasgow club a second time in 2011 to move to Wigan Athletic and joined Hull in 2015 after leaving Chicago Fire.
