Padraig Amond was a constant threat in attack for Newport County

Padraig Amond's first-half goal propelled Newport County into the League Two play-off places as they edged struggling Cheltenham Town.

The Irish forward, signed from Hartlepool United in the summer, was quickest to pounce when the ball went loose from Matty Dolan's corner.

Cheltenham almost levelled when Kyle Storer's header was cleared off the line with Joe Day beaten.

Keeper Day then pulled off a fine stop in injury time to again deny Storer.

Newport County manager Mike Flynn told BBC Radio Wales:

"I'm really pleased... we kept a clean sheet and managed the conditions quite well.

"The players have got to keep doing the good work they've been doing.

"I want to improve the football club, the results over the last few years... I think we're doing that."
