Republic of Ireland: Martin O'Neill agrees two-year contract extension

Martin O'Neill has been in charge of the Republic of Ireland since November 2013.

Martin O'Neill has agreed a contract extension which will keep him in charge of the Republic of Ireland for the Euro 2020 campaign.

The 65-year-old former Aston Villa boss succeeded Giovanni Trapattoni as manager of the Republic in November 2013.

Assistant manager Roy Keane has also extended his deal with the FAI.

"I think there are exciting times ahead for us with some younger players coming through," said O'Neill.

"I wasn't sure I would get used to international football, but qualification for the Euros made it all worthwhile."

The Republic play Moldova in Dublin on Friday and visit Wales on Monday needing to win both World Cup qualifiers to stay in the hunt for a play-off place at the 2018 tournament.

"I think there is much to look forward to," added O'Neill who also managed Celtic, Leicester and Sunderland.

"We qualified for a competition and I think season tickets have gone from 4,000 to 16,000, so I think there is some evidence we are doing OK.

"We're still in the mix and one out of one [in qualifying] at this minute is not too bad."
