Lasse Vibe has scored 35 goals in 91 league appearances for Brentford

Brentford recorded their third successive victory at the expense of managerless Sheffield Wednesday.

The hosts took the lead when Lasse Vibe scored for the sixth time in five appearances.

Sergi Canos came close to doubling the Bees' lead after the break when his long-range shot went just over the bar.

Substitute Lucas Joao's header deflected wide for the Owls before Florian Jozefzoon wrapped up the win with a neat finish late on.

Victory for the impressive hosts moved them up to 10th in the table, four points outside the play-off places.

After a slow start Brentford enjoyed the majority of possession and chances, with Jozefzoon guilty of wasting an excellent chance to make it 2-0 at the break.

Wednesday caretaker Lee Bullen made a double substitution at the interval, with Atdhe Nuhiu and Ross Wallace making way for Almen Abdi and Joao, and the latter twice came close to levelling the score.

Brentford travel to league leaders Wolves on Tuesday, while the Owls, who are now 11 points off the top six, host Burton on New Year's Day.

Brentford boss Dean Smith:

"We didn't find our fluidity for the first 20 minutes but once we got the goal we moved up a level.

"I told the boys I wanted to see how they reacted without the ball today and every time we lost it we won it back quickly and high up the pitch.

"It was as complete a performance as we have put in all season, with the added bonus of a clean sheet."

Sheffield Wednesday caretaker manager Lee Bullen:

"The boys' effort was outstanding and I think the fans could see that, but that's the minimum you require and they have given us that today.

"The best team won the game but at 1-0 down you think we will have a go for it and just as we were adjusting, we got done by a sucker punch.

"We were a little bit more controlled in the second half and hoped for a break or shot or header, but it never materialised and you have to give Brentford credit for that."
