Scott McDonald fires in Dundee United's third goal

Scott McDonald scored twice as Dundee United beat Brechin City to move to within three points of Scottish Championship leaders St Mirren.

The Australian struck in the opening minute and fired in again after Sam Stanton had netted United's second.

James Keatings scored a second-half penalty after McDonald had been fouled.

United's Paul McMullan was sent off for a second booking before Brechin's Jordan Sinclair converted a spot-kick after Sean Crighton had been impeded.

Tam Scobbie was penalised in that instance after goalkeeper Graeme Smith had fouled McDonald at the other end and McMullan's second yellow card was for simulation.

Csaba Laszlo's Tangerines have a game in hand over St Mirren, who drew with Greenock Morton after beating United on Friday, while Brechin remain 11 points adrift at the bottom of the second tier without a league win all season.
