Lincoln leapfrogged Newport County into eighth as the visitors suffered an FA Cup hangover at Sincil Bank.

Having earned a fourth-round replay against Tottenham on Saturday, Newport's return to league action saw them go behind to Matt Rhead's header.

Padraig Amond equalised when Matty Dolan's shot was parried into his path.

But Matt Green restored the Imps' lead when he latched onto a ball over the top, before substitute Ollie Palmer scored off the inside of the post.

Newport manager Mike Flynn told BBC Radio Wales: "It was always going to be difficult, no matter who we'd played on Saturday.

"The boys have put in an unbelievable effort tonight, we just defended poorly and missed a good chance at a key moment.

"They're strong at what they do and you can't give away goals like we did, so that was the disappointing thing."
