Daniel Sturridge: West Brom to beat Newcastle to signing of Liverpool striker

West Brom will beat Premier League rivals Newcastle to the loan signing of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.

Inter Milan were also keen on the 28-year-old England international, who has only started five games this season.

Newcastle became a likelier destination, only for their former manager Alan Pardew to persuade Sturridge to join him at West Brom.

The former Chelsea striker wants to play more football to have a chance of making England's 2018 World Cup squad.

Sturridge is expected to have a medical with the Baggies on Monday before joining the club on loan for the rest of the season.

Earlier on Monday, West Brom signed Egypt defender Ali Gabr on loan from Zamalek until the end of the season.

Asked at the weekend about the prospect of Sturridge leaving, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "In the next three days a lot will probably happen but I have nothing to say about that."

Inter had offered a "significant" loan fee, which the Reds were prepared to seriously consider.

The Italians were also prepared to pay Sturridge's wages, reported to be about £120,000 a week, and had opened discussions on a potential permanent move at the end of the season.

Swansea in for Markovic

Swansea City and German side Wolfsburg are in talks with Liverpool over a deal to sign forward Lazar Markovic.

The 23-year-old Serbia international, a £20m signing from Benfica in the summer of 2014, has no future at Anfield under Klopp and is yet to feature in the first team this season.

Permanent and temporary deals are under consideration for a player who has had loan spells at Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon and Hull City in recent seasons.

Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow have also been linked with Markovic, who is hoping for a move before Wednesday's transfer deadline.
