George Saville's goal inside the opening minute sent Millwall on their way to victory at Hull to keep the Lions in touch with the play-offs.

The midfielder met Lee Gregory's backheel to prod home from close range to score his eighth goal of the season.

Jake Cooper doubled the visitors' lead, meeting a corner at the back post to send a looping header into the net.

Abel Hernandez poked in for Hull 10 minutes before the end but Nigel Adkins' side remain in danger.

The Uruguayan was making his long-awaited comeback, having been missing since August with an Achilles tendon tear, and his fourth goal of the season gave Hull hope of extending their unbeaten run to three matches.

But despite late pressure, they could not find an equaliser and were left to rue chances in the first half, the best of which fell to Jackson Irvine, who sent a header narrowly wide with Jordan Archer beaten in the Millwall goal.

Neil Harris' side held on and have now gone 10 games unbeaten in the Championship - the second-best run in the division - to move within six points of the play-offs with 10 games remaining.

Saville gave them a perfect start before Cooper headed in his third goal of the season as Millwall won a fifth consecutive away match.

Hull City manager Nigel Adkins:

"That was by way and beyond the worst performance since I've been at the football club, I need to get to the bottom of it.

"The first half was nowhere near the level that's expected and the level that the players have been producing on a consistent basis.

"I'm very annoyed, I'm trying to keep a calm voice for this, but I thought we were nowhere near what was expected."

Millwall manager Neil Harris:

"The players were outstanding. Five away wins in a row is a big achievement for us.

"A lot of people wrote us off at the start of the season to be bottom of the league. To get to where we are 10 games to go is not a bad response from that team.

"I've just said to the players, 'I want 60 points as quick as possible. See where that takes us.'"
