Ronan Curtis went close to scoring for Derry in the Brandywell win over Waterford

Jack Doyle's first goal for Derry secured victory over high-flying Waterford as the Candystripes chalked up a fifth straight league win.

The visitors bossed the first half and Izzy Akinade saw his goal-bound shot cleared off the line by Gavin Peers.

Derry seized control after the break and Doyle headed in from Ronan Hale's cross while City squandered chances to double their lead.

The win takes Derry above Shamrock Rovers and into fourth place.

Waterford, who sit second and two points behind leaders Dundalk, failed to capitalise on their first-half dominance at the Brandywell.

City keeper Gerard Doherty kept out an early Rory Feeley header before Sander Puri flashed wide of the Candsytripes woodwork.

Puri sent Akinade clear on 24 minutes and the striker slipped the ball past Doherty but Peers got back to make the clearance.

It took 38 minutes for Derry to test Waterford keeper Lawrence Vigouroux and he produced a fine save to deny Rory Hale.

It was a transformed City team in the second half and they came out firing on the restart with Rory Patterson and Ronan Curtis going close.

The breakthrough came on 53 minute as Ronan Hale picked out Doyle at the backpost and the full-back netted with a downward header.

Derry stayed on top for the remainder of the game and should have increased their lead with Curtis, Aaron McEneff and Patterson missing out.
