Frankie Bunn: Oldham Athletic appoint new manager on one-year deal

Frankie Bunn was in charge of Huddersfield Town's Under-23s for three-and-a-half years

League Two club Oldham have appointed their former striker Frankie Bunn as manager on a one-year contract.

The 55-year-old replaces Richie Wellens, who was sacked on 8 June after the club's relegation to the fourth tier on the final day of the season.

He scored 35 goals in 88 games for the Latics and has coached at several clubs but has never managed in the EFL.

"I want to give it a go. I am not here to be a failure," Bunn told BBC Radio Manchester.

"I am passionate, enthusiastic and I would like to say knowledgeable."

Bunn left his most recent role as a development coach at Huddersfield in December 2017, having previously held roles at Wigan Athletic, Coventry City, Manchester City and Rochdale.

Oldham would have avoided relegation to League Two with victory over Northampton Town on the final day of the season.

But a 2-2 draw, coupled with Rochdale's win over Charlton Athletic, meant they were relegated following a run of just win in their final 12 league games.

Bunn added: "We are looking forward. We are going to have to change the culture for sure - certainly in terms of mentality.

"We are trying to introduce a winning culture again at the club which has been missing for a number of years."

Owner Abdallah Lemsagam told the club website: "He knows the club very well from his playing time here and he has a wealth of experience working with young talent, which has impressed me.

"I believe he can take the club forward and give Boundary Park something to cheer about."
