Macclesfield Town 1-1 Cheltenham Town

Cheltenham sacked manager Gary Johnson after their winless start to the League Two season continued at fellow strugglers Macclesfield.

Both sides chalked up their first point of the campaign, but the hosts spurned several chances to allow Cheltenham to take home a share of the spoils.

Danny Whitaker had put the Silkmen ahead with an excellent free-kick 19 minutes in.

However, he saw a 75th-minute penalty saved and Cheltenham substitute Manny Duku snatched a draw with five minutes left.

Veteran midfielder Whitaker pulled all the strings for the Silkmen and, although his team-mates were wasteful, he made no mistake when presented with a chance of his own.

Fouled by Ryan Broom a yard outside the penalty area he picked himself up to send the resulting free-kick in off the foot of Scott Flinders' post.

Macclesfield should have been home and hosed by half-time but Harry Smith and Scott Wilson failed to make the most of their openings.

Whitaker had a chance to double his tally when Will Boyle fouled Nathan Blissett in the box, but Flinders saved his spot-kick.

The Robins were far better in the second half but lacked the quality to trouble the Silkmen until Duku pounced late on.
