Italy bridge collapse: Genoa and Sampdoria games postponed after disaster

Genoa and Sampdoria's Serie A fixtures on Sunday have been postponed following Tuesday's collapse of the Morandi bridge.

Thirty-nine people died and at least a further 15 were injured.

Genoa were due to play at AC Milan, while the city's other top-flight club Sampdoria were set to host Fiorentina.

Serie A president Gaetano Micciche said new dates will be announced in the coming days.

Dozens of vehicles fall 45m (148ft), when a section of the bridge gave way during torrential rain on Tuesday.

A 12-month state of emergency has been declared in the Liguria region and on Saturday there will be a national day of mourning to coincide with the funerals of victims.

'I kept thinking, 'I'm dead, I'm dead, I'm dead'

Several of those still in hospital are in a critical condition.

Former Cagliari goalkeeper Davide Capello, who was driving on the bridge, escaped through the rear window with no serious injuries.

"I heard a dull noise, like a thud in front of me," the 33-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I saw the motorway pillars collapsing and the cars in front of me falling into a void.

"I felt myself free-falling and immediately thought the worst. It was like an apocalyptic movie. I kept thinking, 'I'm dead, I'm dead, I'm dead'.

"Then I don't know, a saint must have stopped me and my car as my car was left hanging. It was stuck in a pillar, pretty much nose down.

"I have a deep sorrow for those who didn't survive. It is a tragedy. I can't believe a bridge can fall down in a modern society."
