Jamille Matt celebrates scoring his 11th goal of the season

Newport County moved back into the League Two automatic promotion places with a 2-0 win over fellow-challengers Colchester United at Rodney Parade.

The Exiles leapfrog John McGreal's side after securing a first league win in five courtesy of a strong second half.

Jamille Matt's 11th goal of the season put Newport ahead on 54 minutes before youngster Cameron Pring's first senior goal made the result safe.

Ex-Newport striker Frank Nouble almost scored a late consolation for the U's.

Newport move to third in League Two, a place and a point ahead of Colchester.

Newport manager Michael Flynn told BBC Radio Wales:

"It is a massive win. They were by far the better team in the first half, but we showed a desire to defend.

"Padraig Amond gave one of the best League Two performances I have ever seen... he was first class today.

"I have not heard anything (about a potential approach for his services from Shrewsbury).

"If an approach comes it is up to the club to deal with that. But until I hear anything, it is business as usual for me."
