Sol Campbell: Alleged homophobic abuse of Macclesfield boss investigated by FA

Sol Campbell's Macclesfield lost Saturday's League Two game 3-2 to Cheltenham

The Football Association is investigating claims that Macclesfield Town boss Sol Campbell was subjected to homophobic abuse during Saturday's League Two match at Cheltenham Town.

Former England defender Campbell, 44, took charge of the Silkmen in November.

Cheltenham director Paul Godfrey said they were "co-operating" with police to try and identify the "relatively small number" of people responsible.

"We should not have to deal with this kind of behaviour in 2019," he said.

"We condemn the actions of those responsible in the strongest terms and will take action against anyone proven to have been involved."

The Gloucestershire club also said they would reminding stewards to report any discriminatory chanting immediately.

Speaking to BBC Points West, Godfrey added: "We've reviewed it thoroughly, the problem was that it wasn't relayed to the control room quickly enough. If it had been done straight away we would have been able to get some resources in to deal with it.

"We've taken steps now to rectify that and make sure it doesn't happen again."
