Barnsley striker Kieffer Moore will miss the rest of the season on medical advice.

The 26-year-old has not played since being concussed in a clash of heads with Gabriel Zakuani during the Tykes' 4-1 win at Gillingham on 9 February.

Moore had scored five goals in six games and is the Tykes' top scorer, with 18 goals this season.

"The player's welfare is the first thing that we think about," said assistant coach Dale Tonge.

Tonge told BBC Radio Sheffield: "We're following medical advice from the top professionals that we've used, and we've been given the advice that Kieffer should be out for the rest of the season.

"He's massively disappointed but he's been in and around the dressing room with the boys, giving support where needed.

"He's a leader within the group and still having him around has given the boys a bit of a lift and will help with the togetherness."

Former Ipswich and Rotherham striker Moore spent a night in hospital following his injury.

He joined Barnsley in January 2018 from Ipswich for an undisclosed fee on a deal running until 2021.

The Tykes are second in League One and two points ahead of Sunderland, although the Black Cats have a game in hand.

"We've got enough players within the squad who will score the goals that Kieffer has scored," added Tonge. "We're well aware of the situation but we're confident in the group we've got."
