England midfielder Izzy Christiansen could still be fit for this summer's Women's World Cup after having ankle surgery on Friday.

The Lyon player, 27, will begin a rehabilitation programme after picking up the injury during Tuesday's SheBelieves Cup victory over Japan.

The French club have not said how long Christiansen is expected to be out for.

Phil Neville's England side begin their World Cup campaign in France in 90 days.

"We were delighted to hear from Izzy yesterday and that her operation went well," the Lionesses coach said about the former Manchester City player.

"We are all wishing her a speedy recovery and will be supporting her in every way we can over her rehabilitation period."

Christiansen was taken off in the first half of England's final match of the SheBelieves tournament, which the Lionesses won 3-0 to claim top spot in the four team round-robin competition.

England boss Neville said after the victory that Christiansen was "vital" to his squad.
