Tommy Wright says he is continuing to search for a striker after former St Johnstone player Stevie May's agent watched the Perth side on Sunday.

Aberdeen have allowed the 26-year-old to talk to other clubs, with Dundee having already spoken to May and Kilmarnock reportedly also interested.

Saints boss Wright was left frustrated by his side's missed chances in a 2-1 League Cup defeat by Ross County.

"We are actively looking to bring at least two players in," he said.

However, when asked specifically about May, Wright stressed: "I have no update on how things are moving on a striker or a defender."

St Johnstone also lost their opening group game against Montrose and Sunday's defeat by County had Wright admitting they will fail to qualify for the knock-out stage.

"We created a load of chances against a side that's going to be in the same league as us, so we have somehow got to get the right personnel in to convert those chances," he said.

May, who has not featured for Derek McInnes' side as they began the season with Europa League qualifiers, began his career with Premiership rivals St Johnstone before signing for Aberdeen from Preston North End in 2017,

He played alongside Dundee coach Dave Mackay at McDiarmid Park and the former defender told BBC Scotland on Saturday: "He is a player we would love to get, he is a player I have played with and I know how good he can be.

"Especially in the Championship, he would basically guarantee you goals."

Mackay was speaking after he and assistant manager Jimmy Nicholl took charge of Dundee's 0-0 draw with Peterhead while manager James McPake was absent with his wife in labour.

"I have met with Stevie and had a chat with him, but he has got a lot to think about," Mackay admitted.

"It is a big decision for him as well - whether he moves out on a permanent deal or leaves on a loan from Aberdeen."
