Dundee beat Ayr United to move above them into third place in the Scottish Championship.

Kane Hemmings struck for Dundee early on and Oliver Crankshaw's shot doubled their lead in stoppage time.

Aaron Muirhead headed against the post for the visitors.

Mark Kerr's team are a point behind James McPake's Dundee and three points above Dunfermline Athletic, who drew at Partick Thistle.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle, victors at home to Queen of the South, are four points better off than Dundee and both teams and Ayr have a game in hand over Dunfermline, who have eight left.

The sides finishing third and fourth will meet over two legs in the Premiership play-off quarter-final with the winner taking on the league's runners-up in the semi-final.

The winner of the second tie will then face the second bottom team in the top flight for a place in next season's Premiership.
