Vicky Jepson: Liverpool Women manager says 'club doing everything' after postponement

Liverpool have had their past two home WSL matches postponed because of issues with the Prenton Park pitch

Liverpool Women's manager Vicky Jepson says the club are "doing everything they can" to resolve pitch issues.

Sunday's Women's Super League match against Birmingham City was called off because of a waterlogged pitch at Prenton Park, home of men's League One side Tranmere Rovers.

It was Liverpool's second home postponement in three weeks.

"It's just disappointing that Tranmere can't sort this pitch situation out for us," Jepson told BBC Sport.

"We have had good momentum with the last two results going our way against Bristol and Blackburn so it would have been good to play [on Sunday]."

Liverpool's home match against Manchester United on 12 January was postponed, while Liverpool moved their Women's FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers on 26 January to Bamber Bridge, near Preston.

Prenton Park hosted four men's games at the ground in 12 days last month, a schedule forced in part by the postponement of an FA Cup third-round home replay against Watford.

"The players are professional and know we can't control these things but it's disappointing - all the hard work that went in during the week to prepare for the game," Jepson said.

"We have to concentrate on controlling what we can control which is our performance on match day when we are actually allowed to play."

In a statement released by Liverpool on Sunday, chairman Peter Moore - who is also chief executive of the men's side - said the club will "explore all options" on facilities to host WSL games.

"While these problems are not unique to us - with other WSL games called off both today and earlier this season - we need to try to find a solution to provide our LFC Women with the surface they deserve," he said.

The quality of the playing surface at Prenton Park has been criticised this season, with large patches of the pitch lacking grass.

In December, Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes apologised after saying the Prenton Park surface was the worst in the Women's Super League and calling it "a stain" on Liverpool FC.

Liverpool Women are not the only WSL team to suffer from match postponements this season.

Tottenham game with Bristol City was also called off because of a waterlogged pitch on Sunday, while Bristol's home game against West Ham was postponed in December. Birmingham City's meeting with Manchester United was also called off in December.

A Football Association spokesperson said: "We are aware of the issues relating to the quality of some pitches used for Women's Super League matches, and we will continue to work with those clubs affected to help identify viable solutions going forward."

Liverpool midfielder Rachel Furness tweeted on Sunday the pitch conditions were "not good enough for our league".

In a statement released by Tranmere last month, they detailed the underlying problems of the pitch.

Liverpool's next match is away to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, 9 February (14:00 GMT).

"Everton coming up is a good game, a big occasion and it is at Goodison so the good thing is we know it will definitely be on" added Jepson. "It did mean we got an extra day back to prep for that game which is a bit of a bonus."
