Dover Athletic 1-1 Chesterfield
- Published
Chesterfield took a point from a National League match they had not wanted to go ahead as Tom Denton and Nassim L'Ghoul exchanged goals in a 1-1 draw at Dover.
The Spireites strongly criticised the league's decision not to follow the lead of the Premier League, English Football League, Scottish authorities and grassroots organisations and postpone all fixtures because of the current coronavirus pandemic.
Dover started brightly, with Jack Munns trying his luck on the volley in the ninth minute after a long throw reached the Chesterfield box.
Kevin Lokko could not quite get the better of Shwan Jalal in a one-on-one, the Dover striker hooking the loose ball towards goal after the Spireites keeper fumbled, only for it to miss the mark.
Not long before half-time Lee Worgan had to make a fine left-handed save to stop Nathan Tyson's powerful drive at the end of a Chesterfield counter-attack.
There was another superb stop from Worgan against Tyson when play resumed, with the former Maidstone stopper managing to trap that attempt under his body.
In the 78th minute the Spireites got an opportunity to score from 12 yards following a handball in the Dover box. Well-travelled striker Denton duly stepped up to convert.
The scoreline briefly boosted Chesterfield up to 16th, but French winger L'Ghoul caught their defence napping just before full-time, scoring with his left foot to leave the Derbyshire club just above the relegation zone.
