Morgan Whittaker slotted home the winning penalty after coming on as a second-half substitute

Championship side Derby County needed penalties to overcome League Two newcomers Barrow in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

With the game goalless after 90 minutes, teenage striker Morgan Whittaker scored the winning spot-kick to give the Rams a 3-2 victory.

Barrow, playing their first League Cup tie in 49 years, had the better opportunities in the first half but both Dior Angus and Jack Hindle failed to make the most of one-on-ones.

Derby enjoyed the lion's share of possession throughout but failed to really test Bluebirds goalkeeper Joel Dixon.

Both he and Derby counterpart Kelle Roos excelled in the penalty shoot-out, with Dixon saving two efforts from the hosts and Roos crucially keeping out three of Barrow's.

The Rams did not include player-coach Wayne Rooney in their squad but there was a welcome return to football for full-back Andre Wisdom.

Wisdom came on as a late sub for his first competitive action since being stabbed in Liverpool in June.
