Scott Twine's late strike saw Newport County through to a home third-round Carabao Cup tie against Watford after downing Cambridge United.

The home side dominated possession but a string of chances came and went, including Kyle Howkins crashing a header off the Cambridge crossbar.

Twine finally broke the deadlock when a corner was half-cleared and the Swindon Town loanee rifled home a debut goal.

A sloppy backpass almost let Adam May equalise but his snap-shot went wide.

Newport can now look forward to hosting Watford, the team relegated from the Premier League last season and who needed penalties to see off Oxford United, in the next round of matches which begin on Tuesday, 22 September.

The League Two side have earned a reputation as a dangerous side to face in knock-out competitions but have mostly impressed in the FA Cup in recent seasons, and have not reached the EFL Cup third round since their return to the Football League seven years ago.

Newport manager Michael Flynn told BBC Sport Wales:

"We were excellent form start to finish, the only disappointing thing was the amount of chances we missed.

"We created chance after chance - 13 corners I think - 28 attempts at goal and over 70% possession and let's be honest, that's almost unheard of for us.

"So I'm delighted, it was an outstanding performance and when you look at it, it was a goal deserving of a win - Scott was excellent all night."
